The company was formally founded in 2005 as a special-purpose acquisition company, later acquiring its Batesville facility from Eastman Chemical. FutureFuel operates two primary segments: Chemicals and Biofuels. In the Chemicals segment, it provides custom and toll manufacturing services for specialty chemicals, agricultural chemicals, coatings, industrial and consumer cleaning products, oil and gas applications, and specialty polymers. It also produces performance chemicals like polymer modifiers and glycerin-based compounds. The Biofuels segment focuses on biodiesel and petrodiesel blends, managing logistics via truck, rail, and barge. FutureFuel is known for its 50+ years of operational history, environmental stewardship, and safety compliance. Financial performance has been mixed recently; the company reported a net loss and negative profit margins, though it maintains a strong balance sheet with no debt. Current CEO Roeland Polet, appointed in September 2024, leads the company. With approximately 500 employees, FutureFuel emphasizes innovation in complex organic chemistry and provides tailored solutions to a diverse clientele. Recent challenges include a hostile proxy contest and strategic review, but the company remains committed to its core markets and value creation. The company's long-term vision focuses on leveraging its manufacturing flexibility and experience to capture growth in specialty chemicals and renewable fuels.
