Questions

What is an ETF?

An exchange-traded fund holds a basket of assets — usually stocks or bonds — and trades on an exchange like a single share. Buying one share of a broad-market ETF gives you a slice of every company it holds.

What does the expense ratio mean?

It is the yearly fee charged by the fund, expressed as a percentage of what you hold. A 0.03% expense ratio costs $3 a year on $10,000, deducted from the fund's value rather than billed to you.

How is an ETF different from an index?

An index is a calculation — a number published by an index provider. An ETF is an actual fund you can buy that tries to reproduce that number's return, minus fees.
