Semiconductor materials: the consumables a fab cannot run without

A fab's capital equipment gets the attention, but the plant stops without a continuous supply of extremely pure consumables. Several of them come from a small number of producers in a small number of countries, which is why this branch appears on every serious analysis of semiconductor supply risk.

Semiconductor materials are the high-purity substrates, chemicals and gases consumed in manufacturing — silicon wafers, photoresists, process chemicals, specialty gases and compound semiconductor substrates.

The defining requirement is purity. Contamination at parts-per-billion levels changes electrical behaviour or creates defects, so these are not commodity chemicals with a tighter specification — they are different products, made on dedicated lines, qualified for years against a specific customer's process.

Qualification is what makes the supply concentrated. A fab cannot switch supplier for a critical chemical without re-qualifying the process, which takes months and risks yield. So relationships are sticky, alternative suppliers are slow to enter, and a disruption at one producer propagates further than its market share would suggest.
