Leading stocks, a clear theme, and the hours of watching it requires
A method that requires a clear market theme and the leaders within it, and that produces nothing at all when neither is present.

Key takeaway
- Livermore traded leaders in the dominant group, not whatever was cheap or familiar
- The method has no output when there is no clear theme, and periods of that can last months
- It needs thirty to sixty minutes of daily attention, which is more than any mechanical system here
Trading the leaders
Livermore's practice was to identify the dominant theme, find the group expressing it, and trade the strongest stocks in that group. He regarded trading a laggard in a strong group as a common and expensive error.
This is the same observation O'Neil later formalised as the L in CAN SLIM. The cheaper second-tier name in a hot sector is cheaper for reasons that usually become apparent.
The theme requirement, and what happens without one
The method needs a market with a discernible dominant driver — a group of stocks moving on something identifiable. In a directionless market with no clear leadership, Livermore's answer was to hold no position.
What thirty to sixty minutes a day buys
This is a discretionary price-reading method. The daily work is watching how the leaders behave near their pivots, whether volume is expanding on the moves that matter, and whether the theme is intact.
| System | Daily time |
|---|---|
| Dual momentum | 15 minutes a month |
| Turtle breakout | 15 minutes after the close |
| Weinstein stages | An hour a week |
| Livermore | 30–60 minutes daily, watching price |
That difference is not incidental. A mechanical system's rules can be applied from closing data by anyone; this one requires a skill that is built by watching, which is why the time cost never falls.
These are documented methods described for study. Nothing here is investment advice, a recommendation, or a claim about future returns — every system on this page has losing periods, and the pages say where.
Reading about a system is not having one.
