FDA said Casgevy is now approved for patients aged 2 years and older with either sickle cell disease with recurrent vaso-occlusive crises or transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia. The agency also said this is the first gene therapy approved for patients aged 2 years and older with SCD.
The review was fast: 53 days after filing, and the approval was chosen as the eighth one under the Commissioner's National Priority Voucher pilot. That speed is important because it says the FDA can compress the timeline on therapies that address clear unmet need.

Evidence base
The pediatric data are still small, but the signal is strong enough to justify the broader label.
FDA said the younger SCD study included 11 patients, with all eight evaluable patients achieving the primary efficacy outcome of no protocol-defined severe VOCs for at least 12 consecutive months. In the younger TDT study, eight of nine efficacy-evaluable patients achieved 12 months of transfusion independence.
That is a small dataset, but it is enough to support extrapolation when the mechanism is already validated in older patients and the therapy is built on the patient's own edited cells.
